Schleiss AG, a Swiss contractor specialising in dismantling and earthmoving, has been in the construction business for over 30 years and has always been committed to staying at the forefront of technological advancements to provide the best service to its customers. Moreover, they pursue holistic solutions that include all work steps from planning to execution and disposal.

“One of the most significant innovations we've embraced is 3D machine control, and it has completely transformed the way we work,” said Marcel Schleiss, the owner of Schleiss AG.

Schleiss AG had the opportunity to be among the initial customers to experience the collaborative capabilities of Caterpillar's NGH excavators with 2D Grade Assist and Leica Geosystems' 3D machine control solution, thanks to the newly introduced compatibility option.

New levels of efficiency and precision

The Cat Grade 2D Assist system is highly proficient at precise grading and levelling in two dimensions, primarily focusing on the horizontal plane. In contrast, the Leica MC1 3D machine control system expands this functionality to encompass the vertical dimension. With the additional 3D machine control, operators such as Fabian Stadelmann from Schleiss AG, can now design, excavate, and validate not just in horizontal dimensions but also at multiple depths and slopes.

“The Leica 3D machine control system allows for precise excavation, reducing unnecessary material removal and ensuring that work can be carried out with minimal assistance,” says Stadelmann. “It's efficient and user-friendly, I can work completely independently.”

To enhance efficiency and facilitate real-time data exchange, Schleiss AG utilises Leica ConX cloud-based collaboration platform. This platform allows them to seamlessly share design files, monitor project progress, and provide remote support when needed.

“We use Leica ConX and have 3D machine control on our excavators since 2010, and the impact has been nothing short of incredible.” Schleiss also emphasised how this innovation has reduced the need for excessive staff on their construction sites, improved precision, and eliminated errors in material removal. “It's safe to say that 3D machine control is one of the best things invented in recent decades for the construction industry.”

Streamlined installation

But it's not just about the technology itself but about how well it works together. Thanks to the valuable support of Avesco AG in delivering Caterpillar machines to customers, we achieved seamless interoperability between the CAT 2D Grade Assist feature and the Leica MC1 3D machine control. This streamlined installation process ensures no downtime in the field, allowing our customers to maximise productivity without disruptions.

“In conclusion, we can wholeheartedly recommend this solution to anyone in the construction industry,” says Schleiss. “At Schleiss AG, we're proud to be at the forefront of innovation, and with partners like Leica Geosystems and Caterpillar, we look forward to even more efficient and precise construction projects in the future.”
